Discover Japanese woodblock printing and its similarities to watercolour painting.
We are looking for a way to get started with this centuries-old art form. Mokuhanga differs significantly from the classical relief printing techniques of the West. The ink does not sit on top; it soaks into the damp paper. This opens up a wide range of possibilities for the artist. Patience with oneself and the image, and the courage to take risks in order to venture into the new and unusual, are paramount. Furthermore, this course offers the opportunity to combine watercolour and woodblock printing. Printing is done by hand and can be continued at home. We work in both representational and abstract styles and, alongside the two techniques, explore composition, perspective, proportion, space and colour. We work in the studio and in the surroundings of the academy.
