Everything you ever wanted to know about oil paints!
From the transition from the early Renaissance to the Renaissance, the use of oil paints had a decisive influence on European painting. The advantages of these paints are just as highly valued today as they were then. Oil paint allows for ‘wet-on-wet’ painting, the application of both very impasto and very transparent (glazing) layers of paint and, above all, the easy and quick creation of colour gradients and transitions. The binders in oil and resin oil paints are drying oils and resins, which give the colours a brilliance and depth that can never be achieved with gouache or tempera paints.
In addition to teaching technical basics, this course naturally focuses on painting and individual painting projects. Painting techniques will be addressed in class, as will questions of representation. Due to the time available, the practical implementation will focus primarily on so-called ‘prima painting’, but painting techniques such as layering can also be discussed and tried out. The choice of motif is free within the broad scope of figurative painting and can range from still lifes to interiors, figurative representations and portraits to landscapes or even freely invented subjects. The painterly approach can be precise and accurate, but also expressive or free. No previous knowledge is required.
The course is also aimed at anyone who is looking for general support in choosing the right materials and painting techniques to realise their ideas.
