Oil painting is considered the ‘classic supreme discipline’ of painting and offers artists a wide range of techniques and means of expression. A particularly outstanding technique within oil painting is prima painting, also known as alla prima painting. The term is derived from the Italian word “prima”, which means ‘at first glance’. This method aims to apply the paint directly and immediately to the canvas without making any subsequent corrections such as retouching or wiping away wet paint.
Primama painting enables a spontaneous and rapid painting style that allows the artist to bring emotions and thoughts directly into the composition. This technique requires a good sense of both colour and form, as every brushstroke is crucial and immediately visible. The challenge is to find the right balance between control and spontaneity.
In this course, participants are introduced to the classic techniques of oil painting. The lessons begin with stretching the canvas, followed by the priming process. Participants then learn how to paint directly onto canvas or nettle fabric. The aim is to develop the skills to work effectively with primama painting while realising your own creative ideas.
Mastering primal painting not only opens up new artistic perspectives, but also promotes the individual development of each participant as an artist. It is an invitation to focus on the immediate experience of colours and shapes and to let your own creativity flow freely.
