Learn to write with ink, a pen and other writing implements, and to create your first letterforms. Immerse yourself in the tranquil art of wielding a pen. In the first half of this course, we will explore the rhythm and proportions of exemplary, classical alphabets, combining them with elements of your own handwriting.
By bringing these preliminary exercises together, in the second half of the course you will develop your first original letterforms using the experimental and artistic design techniques taught in the course, in keeping with the motto ‘From letter to letterform’. Concepts such as tension, rhythm and contrast (e.g. large-small, bold-delicate, flat-linear, empty-full) will accompany you throughout the course. Calligraphy means consciously embracing the tranquillity that surrounds you whilst writing, taking pleasure in the creative handling of words and texts, as well as the joy of using unusual writing tools and inks. Calligraphy is language made visual, interpreting the content of a text in a personal way through imagery.
This workshop-style course is suitable for beginners and advanced learners alike, as participants are guided individually according to their skill level and progress.
