The ‘lost form’ technique – also known as reduction printing – refers to the production of a multi-coloured print using just a single printing plate. The plate is progressively reduced, whilst the colours gradually build up in layers on the paper. This allows for the creation of complex and precise results with minimal use of materials.
However, this is just one of many possibilities that can be explored together. The course is open to all forms of relief printing. Initial image ideas develop through the printing process into previously unimagined artistic works.
The aim is to experiment in different directions and to respond to the current state of the work as printing progresses.
Found or personal visual material can serve as a starting point. Images encountered in everyday life and sometimes viewed rather casually, or sketches not yet regarded as finished works, are to be transformed through relief printing – in linoleum or wood, black and white or in colour, stamped and layered, small to large format, as single sheets or a series.
This will result in new images that break away from their origins and unleash further visual ideas.
A printing press will be available for the course week!
