Abstract figurative painting – or how a picture comes into being

The canvas is our stage on which we – like directors – stage our figures, spaces and objects. Every element, every figure and every space contributes to this effect. This makes it all the more important to be conscious of which motifs we choose and how we use them.
A central aspect of this week is therefore to clarify one’s own artistic intentions and to work with them in a targeted manner. In doing so, we develop concrete approaches and strategies for compelling abstraction. For it is often precisely through a freer, more open approach to the figure that greater depth and emotional presence emerge.
Creating a picture means telling stories – and at the same time composing abstract surfaces and colours. It is only the interplay of all elements that leads to a harmonious composition. There are only ‘golden rules’ to a limited extent: seeing, recognising and developing an awareness of forms always remains an individual journey.
It is particularly important to me to support and encourage all participants in their personal visual language and their own artistic aspirations. Theoretical input, the joint examination of selected works and group discussion accompany and deepen your own work.
I look forward to our time working together.

What we aim to discuss and explore, amongst other things:

• Becoming aware of one’s own pictorial intentions
• ‘Staging’ the image and its elements
• Understanding the setting of the figures as an element of equal importance
• Consciously steering and developing the desired pictorial atmosphere
• The composition and its balance of painterly surfaces
• Recognising and steering the element of chance in the painting process
• The courage to embrace abstraction in representational painting
