In the beginning was the blank canvas… This is taken literally in that the course on offer aims to cover the entire process, from stretching the canvas to the finished painted surface.
Working with objects – learning composition and the construction of a picture, and developing rules for this.
From simple object arrangements to more challenging still lifes, the foundations are laid for representational painting. This is achieved through oil and egg tempera painting.
Seeing and observing are the starting points for achieving clarity in pictorial representation. This includes an understanding of space, light, perspective, atmosphere, light and dark, three-dimensionality on a flat surface, physicality, materiality and contrasts.
A key focus of this course is the technical translation of the pictorial idea into a perfect visual composition.
Practical work and theoretical discussion complement one another and are intended to lead to a clarification and expansion of one’s own visual language.
The question that arises when looking at a painting is: ‘HOW was the painting created?’, in addition to the ‘WHY’ and ‘WHAT’ it is intended to convey.
