In this course, we will experiment with new possibilities in wood sculpture that are not based on the conventional removal of material using a hammer and chisel or carving iron. Rather, we will try to understand wood as a sculptural medium and experiment with approaches based on the additive principle of layering.
Starting from the drawing, we will develop lines and surfaces in three-dimensional space and explore the interplay between material and form. Most of the time we will be occupied with the practical conception and execution of works made of layered wooden elements. Among other things, we will also work with sanding machines. By immersing ourselves in the creative process, diverse and personal works will emerge that leave room for creative ideas. The course particularly aims to support the development of one’s own artistic approach. To this end, we will discuss historical and contemporary positions. Basic knowledge of drawing and craftsmanship is an advantage but not absolutely necessary.
Please bring a sketch pad, pencils, combination pliers, work gloves, dust mask, safety goggles and, if necessary, an apron and ear protection.
