Learn to write with ink, quills and other writing instruments and how to design your first typefaces. Immerse yourself in the quiet art of guiding a quill. In the first half of this course, we will focus on the rhythm and proportions of exemplary, classical alphabets in combination with elements of your own handwriting.
In the second half of the course, you will combine these preliminary exercises to develop your first own typefaces, applying the experimental and artistic design techniques taught in the course, according to the motto ‘From writing to typeface’. Terms such as tension, rhythm and contrast (e.g. upper and lower case, strong and delicate, flat and linear, empty and full) will accompany you throughout the course. Practising calligraphy means consciously engaging with the calm that surrounds you as you write, enjoying the creative handling of words and texts, and taking pleasure in using unusual writing tools and inks. The art of writing is language made visible, interpreting the content of a text in a personal way and capturing it in an image.
The course, which has the character of a workshop, is suitable for beginners and advanced students alike, as the participants are worked with individually according to their skills and progress.
