Paths to abstraction in figurative painting
Even in contemporary painting, working with the figure remains an exciting and inspiring process. The human figure – in all its facets – should naturally be a central theme. We also want to explore the pictorial space surrounding it, which is often just as important for the narrative power (and indeed for the composition of the picture) as the figures themselves.
A particular focus this week will be on developing concrete paths and strategies towards convincing abstraction. Such alienation and transformation in no way call figurative work into question – nor does our intention to tell stories with images. On the contrary: a freer, more abstract approach to form and content results in a denser, more emotionally tangible painting and a more vivid figurativeness.
In order to give the theme ‘Paths to Abstraction’ sufficient space, we deliberately refrain from working from models. Existing nude sketches and/or photographic material are welcome. Short theoretical introductions and joint discussions support the painting process. Any technical questions that arise will also be clarified together, either in the group or individually.
Central themes of the seminar:
Becoming aware of your own pictorial intention
Recognising the symbolic content of the figure(s)
Deliberately staging the image and its elements
Developing the courage to embrace abstraction in representational painting
Getting to know concrete means and strategies of abstraction
Using chance as a creative opportunity
Understanding the figure’s environment as an equal component of the image
Understanding and applying composition as an essential element of painting
