Experimental painting

The wonderful season of autumn invites us to make all sorts of observations. The coloured leaves may already have fallen to the ground in great numbers, and yet autumn is a sight to behold: those colours and that crisp air that tickles the nose. Perhaps there is already a hint of snow in the air, and you can almost smell it. And we are familiar with the mist that slowly fills the woods and fields. What does nature do in autumn? Nature withdraws. It sheds everything old to quiet the sap, turn inwards and build up new strength, which then rests completely in winter and sprouts anew in spring.
Autumn is also a time of harvest. You can even pick plenty of berries well into late autumn. The last flowers are still in bloom. The many fruits that can be harvested at the start of autumn may already have been stored away and are waiting for us to help us get through the winter.
Autumn is also a time when we experience reduction. This applies to drawing and painting too. Reduction lends works great power and depth.
Autumn is also a great source of colour inspiration. This workshop focuses on natural and earth tones: ochre, raw sienna, burnt sienna, umber, iron oxide red, carbon black, zinc white, green earth and indigo are shades which, when mixed, create an infinite variety of colour moods, just as we experience them on the most beautiful autumn days. The moments of light and shadow, the finely structured forms of branches and leaves, and also the mysterious moments of mist serve as inspiration. The autumn moments experienced personally, along with the thoughts and feelings that accompany them—what autumn means to you—are of essential value. Furthermore, colour studies using these natural colours provide colour experiences that are essential for painting. This fosters a confidence in one’s fundamental sense of colour and sensitivity in the nuances of colour application. It is these subtle colour differences that reveal the true quality of the painting.
Both workshops – experimental drawing and experimental painting – which explore this fascinating topic, offer an ideal opportunity to develop your skills and learn new techniques in both media. Here, participants can explore different methods under expert guidance and apply them to their own work. Experimentation plays a major role in the working process. This does not refer to chaotic activity, but rather to careful observation, trial and error, reflection and an openness to new ideas.
Personal feedback sessions, general discussions of the work and, above all, the daily slide lectures on art history reflect on the individual works, thereby deepening the learning process and personal development.
